Warrior Sound in Helsinki

Landing in Helsinki for the very first time felt great from the start. The occasion was even more meaningful: celebrating 35 years of Lion Head Sound, a cornerstone of the Scandinavian reggae and dancehall scene. Fadda Francis, the founder and driving force behind the sound, soon turns 70 and has been DJing for nearly five decades. Together with Rumpunch and DJ Chargie, the whole crew welcomed me with open arms and good vibes.

After checking into the Crowne Plaza, I decided to take a walk through the city. The sun was out, the sky was clear, and I could immediately understand why Finland often ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world. The energy was uplifting: a multicultural city where people treat each other with respect and warmth. In just a short stroll I passed tourists exploring, students hanging out in the parks, an open-air jazz festival with free DJ sessions, and even a half marathon looping around Töölönlahti lake right in the middle of the city. The atmosphere was contagious – Helsinki was alive, and it pulled me right in.

By the time I arrived at Kuuda Linja Club, it was clear that this night was going to be top notch. Dancing crews with roots in Jamaica, fans from all over the region, and longtime friends of Lion Head had all gathered to celebrate. The warm-up set came from VG+ of Komposti Sound, who held down the decks with style and reminded everyone why Komposti put Finland firmly on the international reggae map.

When my turn came, I opened with Gentleman – Dem Gone to rep Germany before diving into a journey that touched on modern roots, dancehall, and even some soca from the caribbean islands. The energy in the room was mad – forwards, dance moves, and non-stop vibes from start to finish. Closing the night, Lion Head Sound and I went back-to-back in a dub-fi-dub session. Hearing some of their legendary specials live and direct was a true treat and the perfect way to end the celebration.

A massive thank you goes out to Fadda Francis, Rumpunch, DJ Chargie and the entire Lion Head crew for the love and hospitality, and to everyone who came out to make this night unforgettable. Helsinki left me with memories that I’ll carry in my heart – and I can’t wait to return.
